Hi Raf, Andri and Sir W. Three cheers for the three of you for having reached A.A. You really can be proud! Your pictures are most impressive. It seems that in spite of mobile phones and some new roads this still is the real Africa. Maybe you find some friends to accompany you to Nairobi? Take care!

Hi Sam,
Greetings, yes this is an interesting route but somewhat expensive. I would suggest the ferry from Venice to Alex to avoid the middle east. I love the middle east, but you will waste so much money getting around the med, things only become cheaper in Syria, and unless you intend to do some serious desert bashing in Syria, you can do alot more, alot faster, alot cheaper as independent travellers through Turkey, Syria Jordan. Only in Egypt do things become very challenging if you go through the western desert.

Or, if you fancy a real adventure, crack on down through Algeria- Niger- Chad- CAR- Congo -Uganda-Kenya. You know-the old trans Africa route. Only the Congo is a bit dangerous. And some overland trucks still do this. The (Eastern) route we are on is now all a bit pedestrian (tarmac ALL THE WAY) unless you (foolishly-like us) choose to go off the more beaten track in places (Sudan Ethiopia etc). Then Africa becomes Africa and things become a bit more hairy.

We have both done east and west before and chose east for ease and access to the more classical "Arab" Sahara desert that interests both of us. (the west is more Touareg and less Arab- if you will forgive my gross generalisation).

Email me on raf@kayakpemba.com I shall not be back in the UK until May and then only for a short while, as I live in Tanzania. Or better still fly down and see me and have a beer/coffee on the sunny island of Pemba with me. cheers

What joy to know you have found a path.
I too loved the Long way round series, destinations for the sake of it and because you simply can. Anxiously awaiting the next instalment and more fabulous pictures...

A thousand Salaams to you both,

La ilaha ill Allah.
