Every day the expedition expenses were recorded by the expedition accountant, Miss Cisca Zwiers. She would have to contend with illegible receipts in Arabic/Amhareic and then Turkish. When she asked people what they had spent she would often be greeted with a grunt or a pair of hands spread wide. After all, no one likes money. However due to her tenacity and surprisingly little guesswork, a coherent record of expedition expense was maintained.
It should be noted that Raf spent more money on Internet and communications because he was communicating with his company in the early stages of the journey, and sending articles home to Landrover world magazine, or updating this website/report.
The Landrover was also owned by Raf and thus all the repair expenses were borne by him, In spite of the Landrover being old, the amount spent on the vehicle was surprisingly little. This document shows that anyone with the can travel through Africa on a Landrover regardless of fuel type or age. Once you own the Landrover, money is not an insurmountable object.

Total expenses in general categories |
Food $ 1483.49
|
Paid for by Raf, Stuart, Sam (in Ethiopia) and Cisca. In Egypt only Raf and Cisca.
Dividing this by three seems to be fair:
$ 494.49 per person.
|
Petrol $784.18
|
Paid for by Raf only. Sam paid a few, but on the whole it is Raf's expenses. The last payment for petrol was in Argo in Sudan. |
Truck $1124.11
|
Raf paid for these expenses. They contain mainly the repairs for the truck and things needed, like jerry cans, wood and tools. The most expensive repairs were in Nairobi, on 2-11-01 ($ 198.91), in Nairobi on
7-11-01 ($ 240), and Addis Ababa on 29-11-01 ($ 143).
|
Accomodation $612.04
|
These expenses include Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.
In Ethiopia it was for 4 persons, in Egypt for 2 persons, and many rooms were shared.
In Egypt approximately $ 30 was spent by Raf and Cisca, which brings the total for their expedition to:
$612.04 - $30 = 582.04
Of the former $ 582.04 an amount of $ 292.30 not paid for by Raf (but by Cisca, Stuart and Sam) = $ 582.04 - $ 292.30 = $ 290
for Raf in Tanzania / Kenya / Ethiopia / Sudan.
This brings the total for accommodation for Raf to 290 + 30 = $320, for Cisca $ 146.15 + $ 30 = $176.15
and for Stuart to $146.15 (plus his expenses in Egypt).
|
Transport $683.33
|
These are expenses starting after taking the ferry at Wadi Halfa. They are only for Raf and Cisca. As the truck is no longer an expense. It contains all taxi's and train transport in Egypt and the flight to Istanbul.
The flights were a total of $166 plus $460 = $626. This brings transport in Egypt down to a mere $ 57.33
(683.33 - 626) for 2 persons, $ 28.66 per person. The taxi expenses in Egypt were $ 26.22 for 2 persons, each paying $13.11
|
Other $1992.24 |
These expenses include: visa (embassy letters), email, telephone, photographs, medicine supplies, a lamp,
entrance to parks and museums and taxi's (before Egypt).
Visas - (Kenya 2, TNT Addis, Sudan 2, Letter UK in Addis, Letter UK in Khartoum, registration and permits in Khartoum, Egypt 3, Turkey 1, copies of papers) have a total of :
$491 Raf paid $ 157.5, Stuart paid $156.5 and cisca paid $118. The remaining 60 $ are permits for the historical sites in Sudan, 3 x $ 20 = $ 60.
Email and Phoning - Emailing comes to a total of $173 but for the last days in Cairo not all the emailing is known. I also think there was more emailing done in Addis, but this is difficult to now calculate. Phoning is almost totally done by Raf, and comes to $ 140.8 This includes an estimated 200 Egyptian pounds in Cairo (= $44 ) but this is estimated. It also does not include Turkey.
Telephone and emailing comes to $313.8
Photographs -
This includes the developing of films and slides, purchasing new films and sending films to Kodak / Europe. It does not include the processing of films in Cairo or Turkey, neither does it include the purchase of lenses and other material in Istanbul.
Photographs thus total to $256
Medical supplies -
These were purchased in Nairobi, and have hardly been used, except for some antibiotics and minor painkillers. Some were used on a local person in Wadi Halfa (painkillers, antibiotics, bandages and gloves, valium)after an accident.
In Nairobi $111 was spent on medicines, entirely by Raf.
Lamp -
A Kerosene lamp was bought in Nairobi for $103, by Raf.
Entrance fees -
In Kenya these were to the national parks, and in Ethiopia to the national parks, volcano's and hyenas. The Sudan charged road tolls.
In Sudan these fees were paid for ina dvance in the form of a "permit", and thus calculated under "visa / permits". The fees for guides and the truck's entry are however inculded here. If this seems complicated, this is because it is.
This all amounts to a total of $ 213.5 for three persons, making it $71.17 each.
In Egypt a further $ 35 was spent by Raf and Cisca,
Stuart paid $71.17, Raf and Cisca each paid in total $71.17 + $17.5 = $88.67
Taxis -
These are paid for by all three, in turns. In total they amount to $110.50, each person paying $36.8.
The taxis in Egypt are included under the "transport" section , because they are an intregal part of the journey,
and not the daily "sightseeing routine."
