We left Khartoum on the Atabara road and cruised along the smooth tarmac at 110 km/h. Our intention was to follow the Nile up to Wadi Halfa while seeing some of the Sudan's more impressive archaeological sites on the way. Due to various misunderstandings we ignored the correct turn to the temple of Massawarat. Instead we attempted to find it by hacking across country. We asked the Bedu for directions and they happily pointed us in the correct directions. But alas our Land Rover is no Camel and we bogged twice in the early evening light.
17 km from the road, we were forced to make our camp. This proved to be a blessing. Our first rough camp in desert. We cooked, ate and then watched the stars. The night was perfect, apart from the slight annoyance that we had no idea where we were in relation to where we wanted to go.
