We cleared the Bayudya desert and arrived at the Nile. Eid had started and Ramadan was over. For this reason the ferries were not running and everyone was at home. Just when we were preparing to camp on the eastern shore, an old man became our guide. He made us drive 5 miles south, commandeered a wooden felucca, crossed the Nile, summoned another ageing landing craft and then carried us over the mighty river. The crew were happy to work, and many other people took advantage of our private charter. The total cost, including feluccas and "fixing" was 10 British pounds. The ferryman mournfully told me that he would charge us 1000 Sudanese Dinars tomorrow, but seeing as we had engaged his entire ferry, he had to charge us 2500. Six pounds seemed fair to me for an entire landing craft.
Absolutely shattered when we reached Karima on the opposite shore we opted to stay in the local flop house.
